However, this needs some context. This generation has grown up with the smartphone as a basic tool, but that does not mean they consume thoughtlessly or switch brands on a whim.

You already know that here we tell you what is really happening, with verified data and no sugar-coating. We will look at how the generation born between 1997 and 2010 behaves. We will explore how they shop, where they look for information, what they think about money and how they really differ from millennials.

Behind the clicks and short-form videos, there are clear patterns. These include constant comparison, an aversion to expensive credit, an interest in investing small amounts and a demand for consistency from brands. Understanding these patterns allows us to read their consumption habits without falling into clichés.

Who Is Generation Z and What Sets Them Apart from Millennials

First, let’s make it clear who Generation Z actually are. The term generally refers to people born between 1997 and 2012, according to the most widely used definition. Keep in mind that some sources set the cut-off between 2010 and 2010, so the exact boundary varies. In 2026, the oldest members are around 29, while the youngest are between 14 and 16, depending on which age range we use. Millennials experienced the transition from analogue to digital, whereas Gen Z has grown up with smartphones, social media and online shopping as a normal part of everyday life.

This difference in context can be seen in their consumption habits. Gen Z members who have not yet moved out spend only around 17% of their spending on essential categories. This is because their families usually cover housing and food, leaving them to spend the rest on discretionary consumption such as leisure, technology, fashion or experiences. Millennials are more established, with spending patterns that are closer to those of previous generations and a greater focus on housing, mortgages and family.

Gen Z is a generation that entered adulthood with less financial room than previous generations, greater exposure to digital advertising and a different relationship with money and risk.

How Gen Z Discovers Products: TikTok and Instagram as Search Engines

For Generation Z, social media is about more than entertainment. It is the first place they look for ideas before making a purchase. According to IAB Spain’s 2026 Social Media Study, 54% of users use social platforms to look for information or inspiration before purchasing a product online.

Instagram remains the main source of inspiration for 45% of consumers, but TikTok has established itself as a place to discover trends and products, especially among younger users. The platform is the first choice when a purchase is made directly within a social network (social commerce).

TikTok Shop and Live Shopping: When Video Becomes a Store

Commerce within social networks themselves is advancing rapidly across Europe. In countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain, live shopping on TikTok and Instagram is common among Gen Z. The pattern is very simple: they watch a live video, ask questions in the chat and make a purchase without leaving the app.

European data tells us that around 45% of Gen Z has purchased through live shopping on TikTok or Instagram, and one in four users says they have bought something directly within social media platforms. These numbers are quite high, driven by the undeniable growth of TikTok Shop across several European markets.

However, this does not mean that all Gen Z consumption happens through a phone. 61% prefer to discover products in physical stores, even if they then compare prices or look for online reviews before making a decision. What changes is the journey. First comes digital inspiration, then validation in a store or on a website, and finally the purchase through whichever channel is most convenient or affordable.

What Gen Z Prioritizes When Shopping: Price, Reviews and Brand Consistency

When Generation Z decides to buy something, three factors matter more than the brand name: price, reviews and consistency.

Price. We live in a context of inflation and tight salaries across much of Europe, so price remains a key factor in purchasing decisions. Gen Z compares prices extensively across channels (physical stores, websites and marketplaces) and is willing to switch brands if they find a cheaper option with good ratings.

Reviews and social proof. They read other users’ opinions, watch “unboxing” videos and trust real experiences more than corporate messaging. Repeated negative reviews can rule out a product within seconds, even if it has strong advertising.

Brand consistency. This generation does not expect perfection, but it does expect consistency between what a brand says and what it does. Issues such as sustainability, working conditions, treatment of suppliers and positions on social issues matter greatly to them, but above all, brands need to be credible rather than relying on pure marketing.

Loyalty is not automatic out of habit, but it does exist towards brands they feel aligned with. They switch easily when they perceive inconsistency or when a better alternative appears in terms of price or experience.

More Daytime Consumption and Shared Experiences

Another visible trend is the shift towards more daytime consumption focused on shared experiences. Some studies show that, when it comes to eating outside the home, Generation Z already spends more than 60% of its spending through non-traditional channels. This includes supermarkets, convenience stores, petrol stations, bakeries and vending machines, rather than traditional bars and restaurants.

In beverages, the pattern is very similar. Two out of three young people choose lower-alcohol options. They are not necessarily drinking less; they are drinking differently. The all-out party at 3 a.m. is no longer the main trend. Now they drink earlier, lighter and with a stronger social purpose.

Saving and Investing: A Different Relationship with Money

There is a stereotype of a generation that “lives in the moment” and does not take care of its financial situation. However, the data tells a different story. Some studies indicate that 73% of Generation Z lives in the moment and does not plan much, but at the same time we are seeing an investment boom that did not previously exist among this group.

Young Europeans are no longer limiting saving to keeping money in a current account. They are beginning to build their own investment portfolios. Around 46% of young people aged between 18 and 24 choose to invest in stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to build long-term wealth, leaving property further down the list.

Most of these young investors choose ETFs that track global and US indices. In 2025, the number of Gen Z customers investing in stocks and ETFs grew significantly on digital platforms, and this group now represents an important share of equity investors.

Cryptocurrencies also play an important role. Almost half of young people with financial investments have traded crypto assets, and Generation Z already represents a significant share of crypto investors in Europe. They are less focused on long-term products or retirement. Instead, they are more interested in building wealth in a flexible and accessible way, starting with small amounts.

They no longer see saving simply as money sitting idle in an account. Gen Z sees savings as capital that can be put to work, even if conservatively.

Saving also has a social dimension. Viral saving challenges on TikTok and Instagram have generated a lot of social conversation, with a large proportion of Gen Z actively participating in these challenges. They share tips, goals and achievements. Saving stops being a private matter and becomes content and community.

Payment Methods and Their Relationship with Traditional Banking

As you would expect, Generation Z has a pragmatic relationship with money and banks. They prefer digital, fast solutions that give them greater control over their spending. The options they use most are:

Debit and prepaid cards ahead of credit. In most European countries, debit cards are clearly more popular than credit cards, and this preference is even stronger among younger people. Many avoid revolving credit.

Bizum and mobile wallets. In Spain, for example, Bizum has become the preferred payment method among people under 45. In other European countries, similar solutions play a comparable role, such as Swish in Sweden, MobilePay in Denmark or Twint in Switzerland. Among Gen Z, 52% choose digital wallets as their main payment method, compared with 33% who use cards and just 7% who rely on cash.

Digital banking and neobanks. Most operate primarily through their smartphones, using traditional banking apps or neobanks. They value user experience, real-time notifications and spending-control tools more than physical branches.

As we mentioned, this generation still uses cash, but mainly in specific situations. For everyday payments, digital payment is the norm.

What Brands Need to Do to Connect with This Generation

Connecting with Generation Z is not about using their language or simply being on TikTok. Brands need consistency, transparency and genuine usefulness. There are several factors that matter greatly to these young consumers when becoming familiar with a brand:

Authenticity and consistency. They are experts at quickly spotting forced marketing. They expect brands to acknowledge their limitations and be transparent about issues such as sustainability, working conditions and the real impact of their products.

A seamless digital experience. Slow websites and apps or complicated purchasing processes are an almost instant reason to abandon a purchase. They value simplicity, speed and the ability to solve problems without bureaucracy.

Useful content, not just promotional content. Tutorials, honest reviews, comparisons and educational content perform better than sales messaging. Content creators and communities have more influence than traditional advertising, which is why the term “influencers” has become so widespread.

Flexibility and control. Multiple payment options, clear return policies and the ability to manage everything from a smartphone are practically basic requirements.

Brands that understand this do not treat Generation Z as an exotic niche, but as a segment that has simply normalized digital experiences and expects the same from every player in the market.

Frequently Asked Questions About Generation Z Consumption

Does Gen Z really buy through TikTok? Yes. TikTok Shop is growing in Spain, and studies show that short-form video is now the main source of product discovery for this generation.

Is it true that they have no brand loyalty? It’s more nuanced than that. They have less automatic loyalty based on habit, but strong loyalty towards brands they feel aligned with their values. Loyalty is earned through consistency, not longevity.

What do they think about cash? Most use it very little. They prefer digital payments, Bizum and mobile wallets. Cash is mainly used in specific situations such as street markets, tips or certain bars.

Do they have credit cards? Less than previous generations did at the same age. They prefer debit or prepaid cards, following the logic of only spending what they have. They particularly avoid revolving credit after seeing the problems it has caused family members and people they know.

Do they save less than millennials? The data is mixed. They save when they can, but they also save differently. They have less money sitting in passive savings accounts and more money invested in products starting with small amounts.

Generation Z is not a sociological mystery or an anthropological experiment. It is a generation that entered adulthood with digital tools already integrated into everyday life and with less financial room than previous generations. Their consumption decisions make sense when viewed through these two facts, without the need for stereotypes.

Gen Z consumes differently and is already changing the market.
